SWOT Analysis

Analysis objective:

  • Advance my bass playing skills.

  • Get my theory grade up to a 5.

  • Go to university.

  • Start a band.

  • Get signed to a record label.

Internal Factors:

Strengths:

  • I would say that I am a hard-working person and try my hardest with work to ensure that it is of a high standard.

  • I would say that I am a good problem solver, and I am able to work around any problems that come my way no matter how big or small they are.

  • I have come a long way with my bass techniques and skills throughout college. This also includes building up my confidence when playing on stage to ensure that I will not only play louder on stage but allowing me to have more stage presence and utilizing the space around me when performing.

  • I am open to learning a variety of music when performing. This means that I can work with a variety of people in different work situations.

Weaknesses:

  • One weakness I have is my techniques when playing are not to as high of a standard as I would like them to be. For example, I still struggle to play with fills in the song. This means when it comes to faster/ more technical songs I tend to struggle more.

  • Another weakness is my theory skills. One example is that I do not know how to read sheet music. Another example is the notation on the threat board. This is a problem as if I were to be asked what specific notes, I am playing I would struggle to find them. Another example is if I was working within the music industry, and I had to learn a song at the last minute but there was only sheet music then I would struggle to learn the song.

  • A professional weakness I have is with my time management skills. This would not be good in a professional setting as I need to be able get things done on time to remain professional.

External Factors:

Opportunities:

  • Since starting my course here, I have had many opportunities to perform at. One of these being at the Studio. This allowed me to build confidence being on a stage setting and also performing Infront of an audience. Another opportunity I had was being able to perform at the Philharmonic in Liverpool. This allowed me to experience a bigger venue and audience which helped me to build up my confidence. The final opportunity I had was to do a tour around schools which allowed me to get an idea of what it is like to travel around to different places to perform but also to get used to having to adapt to new surroundings and equipment when setting up. Another opportunity I got from this was being able to experience a career within the music industry.

  • In my time within the college, I have had multiple opportunities to be able to experience the professional setting of a recording studio. This has allowed me to get a good understanding of what happens during the process of a recording session.

Threats:

  • A threat that may prevent my progress into university is my practical skills with my bass guitar. This is because even though I have a lot of skills that I can use when performing. However, I can still advance in my skills (for example learning more techniques to ensure that I can play more challenging songs and to also start learning bass slapping. This will allow me to then advance again with what songs that I will be able to play).

  • Another threat that may prevent my progress into university is my theory skills. This is something that I have always struggled with, however, I would like to advance in these skills.

  • Another threat to my progress within the music industry is my lack of knowledge of the industry outside of college. I will do research to build up my knowledge of the industry.

Evaluation of Objectives:

By doing this analysis, I have identified time Management as one of my strongest weaknesses. This could influence me within the music industry as I will start to rush my work closer to the deadline meaning that I will not be able to do my work to as high of a standard that I would like to. I also noticed that my technical skills on my bass are not as strong as I would like them to be. This is a problem as I struggle to play more advanced pieces, meaning I must play more basic versions of them. To achieve this, I will not only practice more but working on these skills more but also to start putting them into songs and working on learning more advanced pieces.
