Personal Statement:
My interest in music management started when researching different roles within the music industry during the level 2 course in college. It immediately caught my eye, and I was instantly interested and wanting to learn more. This is shown in previous college work where we planned a tour around schools, and I had taken upon the role of being the tour manager. This is when I knew that I wanted to study music management and go down the tour manager path.
I have always had an interest in music since I was little. In my early years in school, I used to sing in a choir however when I joined high school, I started building an interest in playing an instrument, which was ukulele. This was my main instrument until year 11 when I discovered different genres of music I would not listen to previously and this is when I decided that I wanted to play the bass guitar. I taught myself to play for a year before joining college. During college, I have found that I enjoy playing pop the most however I also like to play other genres such as pop-punk, pop-rock and alternative.
Within my current studies I enjoy being able to work with different people who have similar and different interests to me. I also like exploring different aspects of the music industry, for example performing, songwriting, and production. My studies have also allowed me to gain a lot of knowledge of the music industry and most importantly what career path I want to go down in the future. My current studies have also been a good base to build off as I have been able to gain not only good management skills but also good organisation skills due to assessment deadlines.
Last year the on the road project allowed me to experience a little of what it is like to manage a tour. Some things that were involved in this were financing, making sure everything was organised and ensuring that there was a risk assessment, so everyone was aware of possible risks and hazards. In this current academic year, I will have the opportunity to run my own gig which will allow me to explore the event management career even more.
The module I am most looking forward to learning about is music rights management, publishing, synchronisation and sponsorship. This is because I have always been interested mainly in music rights management. However, I am also looking forward to the event management, promotion and touring module because this will help me within future careers as it will give me a good understanding on how the touring is organised, it will also give me a good insight into practices and protocols involved within the management, caution of a live event. Also, the project within this module will allow me to have some experience booking and managing an event. One of the skills I have already experienced at college was financing. I experienced this when we done the tour around the stores which I had previously mentioned.
Due to current work, as a store assistant, I have gained skills such as people skills, this will be good in the management scene, some more skills that will help with not only going into music management but also within the course include being able to work within but also being able to work independently.
I am excited to study music management in university because it has been an interest of mine for a while. The course will allow me to gain the knowledge required to pursue a successful career in the industry.
